Hi! MJ here. I prefer to use random, non-directional, non-representational quilting patterns for my gems. Because your brain can't determine a specific, repeating pattern in the quilting, it glides past it and focuses immediately on the flow of light and color in the gemstone. And that's my goal. You can use a stipple pattern, my wild-motion machine quilting pattern (see the Sulky webinar I did in March 2018), or other random design. You could also use parallel lines or 'matchstick' quilting. And then I've also seen the gems finished with identifiable patterns like circles and scallops, etc. It's all about what makes your heart happy!
