Hi! MJ here. I wouldn't suggest hand-quilting this UNLESS you have finger joints of steel! I hand-quilted my first gems over 20 years ago and because of all the seams and layers of fabric, it was hard to get even quilting stitches. And it HURT to push that needle through all the fabric. That's the primary reason I taught myself to machine quilt (that, and all the t-shirt quilts I was making at the time). Now, there IS a hand-stitching technique that do love to use on my gems. It takes a LONG time to finish, but is super enjoyable. Check out my quilt "Communion" on my website: www.mjkinman.com. Click the "Art Quilts" tab at the top and scroll down to "Communion". I embellished this quilt with really fun hashmarks that I learned from some cool stitchers I met at a class at the Nancy Crow Timber Frame Barn. While I loved this technique, I knew I'd be 400 years old before I finished all the quilts I had in my brain. So I machine quilt.
