Hi! MJ here. You are exactly right! Some people don't clip off that extra edge, just so they can have the extra wiggle room to square it up after the quadrant is completely pieced.
I found in your patterns that it's not necessary to cut the outline of the main block on freezer paper. The matter a fact, extra paper adds more flexibility to square up the block.
