Yes, edge paint will help. It depends on how rough you are on your bags. My mom goes through two bags a year and I have been using the same bag for two years.
I have heard that even nice cork backing will ravel and cause a strap to look bad after a short time. Will edge paint help? I would love to make a cork strap without double fold or web/fabric backing.
