I am a newbie to applique, so my question is when applying appliques to background fabric; does the heat and bond prevent the background pattern from showing thru or do you need to make sure to use thicker or darker applique pieces (if not using the kits). Thank you.

Not much. It isn't really adding any opacity. But you can see in the video that on the spool applique, for instance, it doesn't obviously show through the polka dot. So it's not usually much of an issue. Just choose a quieter base fabric.
