Some people use the paper bandage tape. But we like using Sulky Sticky Fabri-Solvy because it will wash away if you should accidentally stitch over it - available at https://www.sulky.com/catalog/sub/sta...
There is paper tape out there that is meant to be sewn through but I don't like sewing through it either because I feel like it can rip the stitches when i take it out.
