A chain stitch is created using a chain stitch needle and a chain stitch looper. 5 thread sergers have this capability. It can be used for seam construction - I've actually used it more for decorative topstitching (stitching from the back so the chainstitch shows). It looks like a regular sewn straight stitch on top but a chainstitch on the back. Animal feed sacks are sewn with a chainstitch so that you can open them by pulling the threads.
