8 thread means it likely has 5 thread capabilities plus some decorative stitch options. Sergers that have decorative stitches also kind of muddy the waters in terms of serging designations. A "5 thread" serger has 3 sets of loopers. The number of needles/threads is somewhat more variable by brand/model.
