8 thread sergers usually means it's a 5 thread serger with decorative stitches (hence the additional threads). I personally prefer two different machines simply I don't have to stop to reset my serger every time I want to do a different stitch - I just go to the other machine I've already set up for that purpose. Efficiency is really important to me.
