"5 thread" sergers use 2 or more needles, and up to 3 loopers. Some sergers are 10 thread, 8 thread, etc. because they have the ability to do decorative stitches that use more threads (they're basically couched). One of my "5 thread" sergers can actually run 10 threads for decorative stitches but I still consider it a 5 thread serger for practical purposes.
