If the butterfly has a running stitch in the beginning, could you run that on the leather and then line up the "prestitched" butterfly for the final stitches?

It doesn't have a running stitch at the beginning. I wouldn't recommend this in case you are ever so slightly off with the placement of the remainder of the design. It would be very noticable and difficult to remove; and there would be permanent needle holes.
