I’m using 12 wt red cotton Sulky thread. Some of the embroidery is bleeding. What should I do?

Even though Sulky Cotton threads are colorfast and even bleachable, there is always excess dye in the darker colors, and red is notorious for excess dye even in garments, at least for the first washing - think about when you buy a red garment, you're careful about that first washing, and only with a dark load. I only ever hear if this happening when the item is hand-washed and then laid to dry without sufficient rinsing or sufficient rolling in a towel. However, there can be another cause too. All embroidered articles should be washed with mild laundering agents. If washed by hand, AMPLE WATER should be used to allow the goods to move freely and rinse thoroughly if necessary. SULKY can also be washed with heavy duty detergents. However, some of these detergents may contain optical brighteners that can cause discoloration. Therefore, you should prefer heavy duty detergents that have no additives of bleaching agents such as chlorine, peroxide, or sodium carbonate. So, you want to avoid detergents that advertise color-safe bleaches, for instance. They are often these additives listed above. It is most important to thoroughly rinse the embroidery before wringing or dry spinning. Embroidered clothing should never be left lying in a damp or wet pile. Both of the above apply in particular to embroidered items that are washed for the first time. The good news is that a stain remover like Shout or Spray 'n Wash will take this bleed out. You might have to treat it a couple of times. It would be best if you could do this in a washing machine with copious amounts of water.
