Thread bleeding can occur when a project is not rinsed with ample water for the first washing, or if it's left in a damp pile. A laundry stain removal product such as "Shout" or "Spray 'n Wash", which are available in most grocery and discount stores, works great for this. It sometimes comes in stick as well as spray form. I prefer the stick form because it allows me to put it on as heavily as I need to in a specific area. You may need to apply this product and launder more than once.
