Oh my, that was a difficult way to do it for sure. We have a product called Sticky Fabri-Solvy that comes in 1-yd. packs, rolls, and bolts. It is the same Fabri-Solvy, however, it has a water soluble adhesive on it, and a release sheet. For what you're doing you could cut it into perhaps 3/4" pieces and then peel off the release sheet and gently smooth it onto the fabric. This should make it stable enough to sew without any topper needed. It will rinse away in warm water. But you could also add it to the top if needed. If your machine has a dual-feed foot option, I would use that if you have it.
