We have 2 that are perfect for free-standing lace: Sulky Ultra Solvy and Sulky Fabri-Solvy. Ultra Solvy is a heavy film type stabilizer (translucent). Fabri-Solvy is a fabric like stabilizer (white). Both are water soluble. The guidance on either is to look for what the designer of the project recommends: Film type (Ultra Solvy - 1 layer) or fabric type (Fabri-Solvy - 2 layers). They sometimes digitize for one or the other. When I'm in doubt I use 2 layers of Fabri-Solvy. But it's likely either will work very well for free-standing lace projects.
