I suspect part of it is the sticky product you're using - maybe a fusible web? The secret to avoid any gumming on your needle is to use Sewer's Aid BEFORE you start to stitch. Once the gummy stuff gets into the back grooves of the needle, thread breaker is inevitable, especially with specialty threads.
There are several other things that could be contributing:
• Some machines prefer a 90/14 topstitch needle
• Slow down your machine.
• With Sulky Sliver or Holoshimmer, lower your top tension at least 1 or 2 numbers. That could account for the shredding at the needle. You may need to lower it more depending on your machine.
• If it's Sulky Sliver or Holoshimmer Thread we recommend using a vertical spool pin, or position it however you can so that the thread comes off as flat as possible.
• If your machine has a thread tree over it (as many newer ones do today) try to bypass that to minimize the twisting.
• If you experience breakage even after these hints, try putting some Sewer's Aid on the needle with your finger and even some on the spool. Sewer's is available on our website, but also in most sewing stores and JoAnns.
• With any thread, and especially with a metallic, when quilting it is very helpful to use a spring-loaded, free-motion foot.
