In my stash I have some leather. Would this work for this bag. It is quite substantial (heavy).

I think the leather will be too heavy, and you would have a great deal of trouble stitching the seams, they would be too bulky. You could use it for accents on the bag, though. I would make one with the recommended material first, and then make that decision for yourself.
