It can be challenging since, after all, it is invisible (practically).
On a machine, there is often a white foot front that can help. Some people say they use a black permanent marker on about 1/4" of the end of the thread, and that helps them thread the needle.
If it's on a machine and you don't have that little white piece behind, that could work as well. Even with that white background it can be challenging. The marker hint might work best. Or marking a pieces of paper with the marker and holding that behind the needle, also can help. Just depends how small the needle eye really is.
