This is a cute design, but how will it hold up outside? It's not waterproofed?

It is not. You could make it more sun resistant by using Poly Deco instead of rayon threads. But cotton fabrics will stay fade in the sun, and this can be minimized by using a polyester fabric. Ellen designed this for use in a shaded area on her porch. You could use water-proof fabrics like rip-stop or nylon. However, those are going to be much harder to stabilize and this outside flags are often seen on both sides. Also these outside fabrics, are very heat sensitive and you need to keep your iron only warm when working with them. But those would be an option. Personally, I would not use such a high density design on those fabrics, though. There's a lot of work in this project, and I would want to keep it on my porch so it lasts many years.
