Just got the pattern myself, and it says:

Two zippered pockets at the front and back of the bag hold

smaller items. We did a fun outside application with the

zipper, zig-zagging it in place on the top of the exterior

fabric.

My suggestion: Of course, you could make an inner pocket that was zippered and stitch it in as you make it, if you want.
