Sulky rayon has been used for probably 75 years on commercial high-speed embroidery machines (and close to 40 years on home machines). It is not as strong as polyester, but it does not stretch, and it is plenty strong enough for computeried embroidery, quilting, decorative stitches and more. I particularly like that the sheen is more of a luster. Whenever I hear this issue of the thread shredding at the needle, it is almost always the needle size. We recommend an 80/12 needle with 40 wt. threads, and some machines may prefer an 80/12 topstitch which has a longer eye. It could be that your machine has a tighter than normal top tension, could be a burr on a bobbon or the throat plate (which might not affect polyester as much or as often - but I'm willing to bet it's the needle). Some rayon thread manufacturers even recommend a 90/14, but for most stitching, the 80/12 is perfect. Sometimes when you're stitching through fusible webs, that creates a whole other issue. I
