I checked with Ellen March and she said: There is a bit of handwork as an option for decorative topstitching, and a nudge to more hand embroidery on optional patch pockets. But we will not be discussing machine embroidery at all.

One thread is for construction. One thread is for decorative topstitching by machine. One thread is for decorative topstitching by hand. They can do both or choose one.
