I have found that issue with many brands of prewounds, too. I take my fingernail and just scratch across the width of the bobbin thread a couple of times. Sometimes I have to do it in a couple of different places to make the thread release. The machines do "bury" the end some, so that you don't end up with a wad of thread falling off that would be a mess and a waste.
If your fingernails come and go, like many do, you can also use blunt-end scissors or something not sharp to do this. I resort to a "Purple Thang"® if my nails are too short.
