Does this open completely for embroidering?

Almost completely. Maybe 2 inches or so along each edge is going to contain the bulk of the pillow case folded away on each side. You wouldn't want to embroider in that area anyway, because it would essentially be the sides of the pillow. I absolutely love embroidering them. Also the Embroider Buddies!
