Here's what's in the kit (below), and I'll mark the optional items for you. You could, of course, use whatever colors you choose in the embroidery as long as it's 40 wt. I do think the 7/32" Cotton Clothesline is a must - you don't want anything thicker when doing embroidery (not that it's impossible, but it could be challenging and frustrating). The Poly Deco for construction is pretty important, and you want it to be a neutral color. The Microtex needles are enormously helpful for a project like this. If you bought these things individually it would be close to probably $56 - not including the optional items. So the $39.99 is a great price and even better with the options included. It's important to have a successful journey this first time out of the gate, so that you get hooked and want to make lots more for friends and holidays. They're like potato chips, you can't stop with one.
