In theory, yes, the weight would be about the same. However, you're asking your machine to deal with 4 LAYERS, rather than one. You could press the layers together with a warm, dry (non-stick) iron, or use a press cloth, that would make them behave more like one layer. (We used to do this before we had Ultra Solvy.) You could also use two layers of Fabri-Solvy, in my opinion.
You're not really stitching around the edge when doing the embroidery, it's the support you need. However, the moving of the hoop and the weight of the rope, requires more stability than you might think. Embroidery Library also recommends Ultra Solvy.
