The 30 wt. Cotton is 1/3 heavier than 40 wt. rayon (it comes in 500-yd. spools). But we have an even heavier thread in the same spools and colors as the 30 wt. thread: 12 wt. Cotton is twice as heavy as 30 wt. cotton. It comes in 130 solid colors and and 126 Blendables, which change colors randomly every 2-1/2 to 5 inches.
In addition, the heavier 12 wt. comes in both the king spools (300 yds.) and the Petites, which are 50-yd. put-ups, preferred by handwork people. But all the spools can be used on the machine.
When doing decorative stitches with a heavier thread than 40 wt., you need to choose your stitches more carefully. Avoid satin-stitch elements and dense designs. You will need a 14/90 or 14/90 Topstitch needle with 30 wt. And a 16/100 or 16/100 Topstitch needle with 12 wt.
30 wt. would be easier to use for decorative stitches - more choices that will work well. With a heavier thread you may find that you have to elongate your stitch choices some.
