Sulky 12 wt. Cottons and 12 wt. Filaine (acrylic with a wool-like feel) are very popular for hand embroidery and cross stitch products, and of course, machine work as well. 12 wt. is slightly lighter than 8 wt. I found this photo online:
I think you could achieve a very similar look with two strands of 12 wt. Filaine thread might appear more like wool, but I think you would love either one. There are more colors in the cotton.
