They won't look good. You'll have all kinds of space using the much thinner 40 wt. thread. What size needle are you using? There are almost always 40 wt. threads used in conjunction with the heavy 12 wt. thread in designs (for the small details), and if you try to use all 12 wt. in those areas, you will definitely have problems. I assume you're using 60 wt. in the bobbin? The needle is almost always the culprit. You want to use a 100/16, and for me I would want a topstitch version of that needle. It kind of depends on the machine. Depending what you're stitching through you might have to upside to an 18 needle.
