How is this used for appliqué?? ("HERA" MARKER FOR APPLIQUE AND SEWING)

It's really used as a pressing and creasing tool. That is it's "marker" capability. It's not like a pen-type marker. It's used to crease the fabric at the machine without using an iron, and the tip can be used to help feed the fabric under the foot. I've attached a better picture I got from the Clover (manufacturer) website that might help.
