We asked Marcia Manning, who designed these, and she said:
That is what the models were stitched with - 2 strands of 12 wt.
2 strands of 12 wt. can make it too tight for some. If stitcher has a needle puller (piece of rubber), they should be able to complete with the strands as stated.
For those that don't want a tight look, they could use 1 strand of 12 wt.
If a stitcher uses 1 strand of 12 wt. for the cross stitches, the blank will show through quite a bit.
And another thought I had:
If you’re stitching with 2 strands of 12 wt. threaded through the needle as opposed to 1 strand through the needle and knotted at the end (which would be 2 strands), you could be actually pulling 4 strands through each time for the first few inches as you pull your needle through.
